iOS 16.6: Native Mail App: Email Messages Activate inside of apps can't be dismissed - user stranded!

 iOS 16.6

Mail app for iOS

Date: 08/22/2023

Description:

Today I came across an especially bad bug with the native iOS Mail app. I've gotten it to reproduce with multiple iPhones running 16.6.

I'm not sure how to describes but the problem is something like this: if an app activates the iPhone's native iOS Mail app, the user gets complete stuck when trying to cancel out of writing the email. The user is stuck staring at an unresponsive email message and has to force quit the app.

This is much easier to show than to describe, so please take a look at a video of the bug:

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install the Native iOS Mail app and have it be the default

2. From inside an app like Facebook, select an option to "Send Email"

3. From a generated email message select "Cancel"

4. Select "Delete Draft"

5. Select "Cancel" (nothing happens)

Result: Users are unable to dismiss ("cancel out of") email messages created by the native iOS app when these messages are shown in app

Example: Using iOS app, select an FB page with "send email" button - from generated email message, select "cancel"

Expected: User should always be able to exit out of an email message - an app like the Facebook iOS app should not rendered unusable by exiting out of a message

Head to a Facebook page that has a "Send Email" option.

Select the "Cancel" option from this email.

Select "Delete Draft"

User is completely stuck. A force quit is required to get the Facebook app working again.

Goibibo app for iOS: iOS Share Sheet - The Cancel Option Doesn't Display in the Auto-Generated email referral message

 iOS 14.4.1

Goibibo app for iOS (version 9.6.0)

Date: 03/15/21

Description:

There is a minor problem with the Goibibo app for iOS and the iOS Share Sheet. The Goibibo app has an option to "Share" the app - which activates the iOS Share Sheet. The "Mail" option from the sharing selection has a problem - the word "Cancel" is invisible with the device set to either the light or dark mode.

This is easier to show than to describe, so please take a look at the following screen shots:

Select the "Share" option from the profile page...

From the iOS share sheet, select the "Mail" option...

The cancel option is not visible - does not matter if the device is set to either light or dark mode...

Steps to Reproduce:

2. Select "SKIP"
3. Select "Profile"
4. From the "Welcome, Guest" profile page, scroll down and select "Share"
5. From the iOS Share Sheet select "Mail"

Result: The Auto-Generated email referral message that is created from the "Share" option on the "Welcome, Guest" profile page has an invisible "Cancel" option

Expected: There should never be an invisible "Cancel" option from an email message generated by the iOS Share Sheet

Flightradar24 app for iOS: Share sheet - auto-generated subject line disappears the second time the email dialog is activated

iOS 14.4 on an iPhone 8

Flightradar24 app for iOS (version 8.12.2)

Date: 02/24/21

There is a minor bug with the Flightradar 24 app and the iOS share sheet option. I have only seen this bug a couple of times before (once with an app called Tangi, and another time with an app Zocdoc) with a few other apps.

It's a extremely minor issue - the fact that I have only seen this problem happen a handful of times in all of the different apps I have tried this with is what is interesting to me!

The Flightradar24 has a feature where the user can share something from inside of the app (an airport, a particular flight) using the iOS share sheet. If the user activates the share sheet, and then selects the email option, the subject line is auto-filled.

Like this:

After selecting a random flight from inside the app (an LAX to Sea-Tac flight) the Subject Line inside is auto-generated.

After this pop-up appears, cancel out of the email and delete the draft. Then select the email option again from the share sheet:

After selecting the Email option a second time, the Subject Line is now blank. Not common to see this with iOS apps!

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Launch the Flightradar24 app

2. Head to anything inside of the app (an airport or a particular flight) that has an option to activate the iOS share sheet

3. Select the Email icon from the share sheet

4. Note that the Subject Line of the email is correctly auto-generated

5. Close out the email (by selecting "Cancel" and "Delete Draft") and then select the email option again

6. Note that the Subject Line of the email is now incorrectly blank

Result: The Subject Line of the emails created after selecting "email" from the iOS share sheet are blank after the email is closed and opened again

Expected: This shouldn't be happening - only happens with a handful of iOS apps

Zocdoc app for iOS: Share sheet - auto-generated subject line disappears the second time the email dialog is activated

 iOS 14.0.1

Zocdoc app for iOS (version 4.61)

Date: 10/04/20

Description:

Here's a minor bug that I have only seen once with another iOS app.

Like almost all apps, Zocdoc has an option to "Share" the app via a menu option. This "Share" option activates the iOS share sheet. If the user selects the email option from the share sheet, they will see the following text in the email message and in the subject line:

You'll notice that the when you first open up the email message, the subject line is auto-generated.

However, if you open the email option a second time...

The subject line is deleted! I've tried this with a great many apps, and I have only noticed this problem happen one other time.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Download and launch the Zocdoc app for iOS

2. Select the "Sign up/Log in" option

3. From the "My account" screen, select the "Share Zocdoc" option

4. From the iOS share sheet, select the email icon

5. Select "Cancel"

6. Select "Delete Draft"

7. From the iOS share sheet, select the email icon again

8. Note that the Subject Line is now blank

Result: The auto-generated subject line (which displays as "Check out Zocdoc") disappears the second time the user activates the email invite via the iOS share sheet

Expected: The auto-generate subject line should not disappear if the user activates the email invite more than once

Moncler app for iOS: Email subject lines have product URL by default

iOS 13.4
Moncler app for iOS (version 2.5.1)
Date: 03/31/20

Description:

Minor problem with the Moncler app for iOS and the share sheet.

When the user goes to share a product using the email option, the url of the product is entered into the subject line of the auto-generated email.

Take a look:

Check out the subject line! Usually (majority of the time) apps simply leave the subject line blank. This is the first time i've seen a URL show up in a subject line. Odd!

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Download and launch the Moncler app for iOS
2. Choose a county
3. Select any product
4. Select the share option
5. Select the email option

Result: With the Moncler app for iOS, the URL of the product shows up in the subject line of the emails generated in the share sheet. Odd problem - not great end user experience

Expected: Subject line should either be blank, or should be related to the product being shared. URL shouldn't be displayed in this subject line

Launch the Moncler app...

Select the sharing option...

Select the email share option...

Tangi Quick Videos app for iOS: Share sheet - auto-generated subject line disappears the second time the email is dialog is activated

iOS 13.3.1
Tangi Quick Videos app for iOS (version 1.4)
Date: 03/02/2020

Description:

Here's a strange bug that I don't believe I have ever seen with an iOS app before.

With the current version of the Tangi Quick Videos app (version 1.4) for iOS, the auto-generated subject line on email messages generated via the share sheet will disappear the second time the user activates the message.

This is much easier to show than to describe, so please take a look at the attached screenshots. As I mentioned, I have played around with numerous apps to see how many auto-generate a subject line. Some apps do, and some don't. Tangi Quick Videos is the only app I have seen to have a generated subject line once, and then have the subject line disappear the second time the email message dialog is called up. Very odd!

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Launch the Tangi Quick Videos app for iOS
2. Head to any video
3. Click the share option
4. From the share sheet menu, select the "Email" option once
5. Note that the email message has an auto-generated subject line that is relevant to the video
6. Cancel out of the message, and select "Delete Draft"
7. Press the "Email" option from the share sheet a second time
8. Note that the auto-generate subject line is now blank

Result: The auto-generated subject line on emails created via the share sheet by the Tangi Quick Videos app disappears (is blank) the second time the email is activated

Expected: The subject line on an email from any video should not be blank. Other apps do not do this

Select any video in the app...

Select the "Share' option from any video...

Select the email option from the share sheet...

I see that the email has an auto-generated subject line!

I cancel out of the email, and select "Delete Draft"...

I select the "email" option a second time...

The second time the subject line is blank! I have never, ever seen this with any other iOS app!
