TalkShopLive: Unintelligible Error Message During Account Creation

 iOS: 16.7.1

TalkShopLive app for iOS (version 1.0.1)

Date: 10/17/2023

Description:

I was unable to create an account using the new TalkShopLive app for iOS today. When attempting to create an account an error message of: "JSON Parse error: Unrecognized token '<'" appeared.

Here's a screenshot of the error message:

While I am not in the United States, and I am currently in a country (from an IP) that is prohibited from creating new accounts or using this app, the error message should be better than this.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Using an iPhone that is not in the United States create an account

Result: Bad error message

Expected: Better error message

CaratLane app for iOS: No ability to delete account

iOS 14.6 on an iPhone 8

CaratLane app for iOS (version 7.2.0)

Date: 06/08/21

Description:

I just read today that Apple has updated their App Store Review Guidelines. The newly updated guidelines include the following provision regarding the ability of users to delete accounts:

I know it is hard to read, but under 5.1.1 Data Collection and Storage, it says that, "If your app supports account creation, you must also offer account deletion within the app."

Surprising to read about this change, in that huge numbers of apps don't offer this ability. If a user were to point this out in an app review, would this, say, necessitate a change in the app?

As soon as I read this, I checked it with a random app called CaratLane from India. And, sure enough, there's no ability to delete an account after creating one.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Download and launch the CaratLane app for iOS
2. Create an account (using email address)
3. Enter into app (signed into account)
4. Head to all areas of profile settings - including "log out" area - no option to "delete account"

Result: The CaratLane app for iOS has no option to "delete account" - the lack of a "delete account" option goes against the newly updated App Store Review Guidelines which state that, "If your app supports account creation, you must also offer account deletion within the app."

Expected: The CaratLane app for iOS must include an option to "delete account"

No option to "Delete Account" is accessible to the user...

No option to delete the account.

Gawq app for iOS: Account Creation - Mobile Phone entry keypad is hard to activate if user creates account using Facebook or Google credentials

iOS: 14.3 on an iPhone 6

Gawq app for iOS (version 1.0.2)

I downloaded the Gawq app for iOS today after reading an article about it. I like the idea of the app, and will continue to play around with it in the future.

There is one minor issue, however. The mobile phone entry keyboard on the "Complete registration" page does not seem to work very well if the user uses either Google or Facebook credentials to create an account.

The keyboard works flawlessly if the user uses Apple ID to create an account. They can continually call up and dismiss the mobile number keyboard continually. It doesn't work so well with Google or Facebook. I actually thought that the keyboard wasn't working at all after I logged in with my Facebook credentials.

Here's a video. The first part of the video shows the mobile phone keyboard entry after creating an account using Apple ID. It works great - the user can continually activate the keyboard.

The second part of the video shows the same keyboard after creating an account using Facebook or Google. The keyboard is VERY difficult to active.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Download the Gawq app for iOS

2. From the landing page, select either the Facebook or Google options

3. After entering in valid credentials, press under "Your mobile phone" to activate the keyboard on the "Complete Registration" screen

4. Dismiss the keyboard

5. Try to activate the keyboard again

Result: The keyboard for the mobile number entry does not work well if the user uses Google or Facebook to create an account - if the user dismisses the keyboard by accident, it is very difficult to activate it again

Expected: The keyboard on the mobile number entry option on the "Complete registration" screen should work well after it has been dismissed by the user

DHgate - Online Wholesale Stores app: Full Twitter DM access requested for account creation

iOS 13.3.1
DHgate - Online Wholesale Stores app for iOS (version 5.0.4)
Date: 03/22/20

Description:

Yet another app that goes way too overboard in regards to Twitter permissions and account creation. Like some other apps, DHgate has an option to use either Facebook or Twitter to create an account.

The Twitter option with the DHgate app has a Twitter login page explaining permissions. This particular app requests the ability to "read, manage and delete" the direct messages of the connected Twitter account.

NO third party app - under any circumstances - should have that access. Most especially an e-commerce app.

Take a look at the permissions requested:

The "Send Direct Messages for you and read, manage, and delete your Direct Messages." is far too intrusive. I've seen this with other apps, reported it, and seen it changed instantly.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Download and launch the DHgate - Online Wholesale Stores app for iOS
2. Select the Account option
3. From the "My Account" page, select the "Sign in or Join Free" option
4. From under the "Sign in with your social account" options, select the Twitter icon
5. Note the Twitter permissions requested

Result: The Twitter permissions requested by the DHgate app are too intrusive - the app requires the ability to "Send Direct Messages for you and read, manage, and delete your Direct Messages"

Expected: Read, manage and delete permissions for Twitter account creation with the DHgate app are too intrusive!

Lomotif app for iOS: Informative Error message: Twitter error message is overly informative

iOS 13.3.1
Lomotif app for iOS (version 2.6.7)
Date: 02/09/2020

Description:

Here's an odd error message for you!

This is the error message that appears when a user tries to create an account for Lomotif, using a Twitter account creation option.

Oddly, there appears to be an expiration date of Tuesday, March 31st, 1981, listed in there. So, looks like there's a bad setting client side, I would assume. This unusual date has shown up in other bugs.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Download Lomotif for iOS
2. Select the profile option on the bottom right of the screen
3. Select the "Sign up| Log in" option
4. Select "Sign up"
5. Select the Twitter option in bottom right

Result: Selecting the Twitter option while trying to create a Lomotif account results in an overly informative error message

Expected: Selecting the Twitter option should result in the user being able to create a new Lomotif account

Download Lomotif and select the "Sign up|Log in" options...

Select the "Sign Up" option...

Select the Twitter option.

snoww: track your skiing app for iOS - A trailing whitespace behind the email address results in an inaccurate error message

iOS 13
snoww: track your skiing app for iOS (version 2.1.5)
Date: 09/20/2019

Description:

There is a minor bug that occurs during account creation with the snoww: track your skiing app for iOS.

If the user enters in an email address with a trailing whitespace behind it during account creation, a misleading error message will appear.

A "Sign up error" dialog appears that states, "Please enter all of the required fields".

This is misleading. The app should either correct the trailing whitespace, or indicate that there is something wrong with the email address field.

This is easier to show than it is to describe, so please see the attached screenshots.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Download and launch the snoww: track your skiing app for iOS
2. Select "Create Account"
3. From the "Create Account" screen enter in a valid first and last name
4. From "Email address" input box, enter in an email with a trailing whitespace behind it
5. Enter in a valid password
6. Select a valid birthday
7. Press the "Create Account" button

Result: A misleading error message appears if the user attempts to create a new account with a trailing whitespace behind an entered email address

Expected: The error message should either be amended to indicate that there is something wrong with the email address entered - or the trailing whitespace should be auto-corrected by the app

Select the "Create Account" option here...

Enter in a valid first and last name...

Enter in a trailing white space behind a valid email address...

With everything filled out (and with a trailing whitespace behind the valid email address) select the "Create Account" button....

A sign up error message appears - no indication to the user what they might have done wrong.
